Netatmo Data Merge and Missing Data

This article explains common issues with Netatmo weather data, particularly regarding station data merge and missing information in monthly aggregated reports.

Understanding Netatmo Data Storage

Netatmo stores weather data at different resolutions depending on the time period:

Time PeriodData Resolution
Last 24 hours5-minute intervals
Last week30-minute intervals
Last month1-hour intervals
Older than 1 month3-hour aggregates

This means that detailed data is progressively aggregated over time, which can affect the precision of historical reports.

Station Data Merge Issues

When you replace or add modules to your Netatmo station, data from the old and new modules may not merge seamlessly. This can result in:

  • Data gaps between the old and new module
  • Duplicate stations appearing in your account
  • Historical data loss if modules are not properly transferred

Common Scenarios

  1. Replacing a defective module: If you replace a broken outdoor module, the new module creates a new data stream, and historical data from the old module may not be accessible.

  2. Moving a station: Relocating your station to a new home can cause data continuity issues.

  3. Account transfer: When a station is transferred between Netatmo accounts, historical data may not follow.

Missing Data in Monthly Reports

You may notice missing data points in monthly aggregated reports. This can occur due to:

  • Connectivity issues: Temporary WiFi or internet outages prevent data upload
  • Module battery depletion: Wireless modules stop transmitting when batteries are low
  • Data aggregation: Netatmo's data compression for older records can cause gaps
  • Server-side issues: Occasional Netatmo server problems can affect data storage

What SmartMixin Shows

SmartMixin retrieves data directly from Netatmo's API. If data is missing in SmartMixin, it means the data is also missing in Netatmo's servers. SmartMixin cannot recover data that Netatmo does not have.

What Netatmo Support Can Help With

  • Data recovery: In some cases, Netatmo can recover data from their backup systems
  • Station merge: They can merge data from old and new modules
  • Account issues: They can help with station transfers between accounts
  • Hardware replacement: If a module is defective, they can arrange replacement under warranty

What Netatmo Support Cannot Help With

  • Data that was never uploaded due to connectivity issues
  • Data older than Netatmo's retention policy
  • Third-party app issues (contact SmartMixin support for those)

Preventing Data Loss

To minimize data issues:

  1. Maintain stable WiFi: Ensure your indoor module has a reliable connection
  2. Monitor battery levels: Replace batteries in outdoor modules before they're depleted
  3. Check the app regularly: Verify data is being recorded as expected
  4. Don't reset your station unnecessarily: Factory resets can cause data issues

SmartMixin Support

If you've confirmed the data exists in Netatmo but isn't appearing in SmartMixin, please contact SmartMixin support with:

  • Your SmartMixin account email
  • The affected station name
  • Specific dates and times of the issue
  • Screenshots from both the Netatmo app and SmartMixin
