Setting Up Weather Alerts
Weather alerts notify you the moment your station's data crosses a threshold you care about — a freezing temperature, a heavy rain rate, a strong gust. This article walks through creating and managing them.
Note: Weather alerts are a Premium feature, currently available on the mobile app only.
Where to Find Alerts
Open the side menu and tap My alerts (bell icon). You'll see your alerts grouped by station.
Creating an Alert
- From the My alerts screen, tap Add alert
- Pick a station — alerts are tied to a single station
- Name your alert — give it a label that will appear in the notification (e.g., "Frost warning — garden")
- Add at least one condition:
- Pick a metric (Temperature, Precipitation, Wind, etc.)
- Pick the condition (greater than / less than)
- Set the threshold with the slider, in your preferred unit
- (Optional) Add more conditions — when multiple conditions are set, all must be true at the same time for the alert to fire
- Tap Create alert
You'll get a confirmation toast and return to the list.
Available Metrics
You can set thresholds on any of the following sensors, provided your station reports them:
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Pressure
- Wind speed and gust speed
- Precipitation — choose from:
- Hourly precipitation (last 60 minutes)
- Rain rate (instantaneous)
- Daily precipitation (total since midnight)
- UV index
- Solar radiation
- Visibility
- Air quality (AQI) and PM 1 / PM 2.5 / PM 10
- CO₂ and Noise (Netatmo indoor modules)
Tip: If a metric isn't in the picker, your station doesn't report it.
How Alerts Are Delivered
Triggered alerts arrive as push notifications on your phone. Make sure SmartMixin has notification permission and that the Alerts notification channel isn't muted in your system settings.
Editing or Deleting an Alert
From My alerts:
- Tap an alert to edit its name, conditions, or thresholds
- Swipe or use the menu to delete an alert you no longer need
Combining Conditions
Use multiple conditions when you want to narrow when the alert fires. Examples:
- Temperature < 0 °C AND Wind speed > 20 km/h — frost-with-wind warning
- Rain rate > 5 mm/h AND Daily precipitation > 30 mm — heavy ongoing rainfall
- Humidity > 80% AND Temperature > 25 °C — uncomfortable mugginess
All conditions must hold simultaneously to trigger the alert.
Post-Storm Summaries
On supported stations, you can set up an alert that sends a summary after each rain storm ends — total rainfall, how long it lasted, and the peak intensity — instead of firing on a threshold.
- Add a condition and pick Precipitation
- Choose Post-storm summary
- Create the alert
A post-storm summary is event-triggered, so there's no threshold to set. It also can't be combined with other conditions — it's the only condition on its alert. If you don't see Post-storm summary in the list, your station doesn't support it yet.
Troubleshooting
I'm not receiving notifications
- Check that notifications are allowed for SmartMixin in your phone's settings
- On Android, verify the Alerts notification channel isn't blocked
- Confirm the station is online and reporting data — see Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Some Android devices aggressively kill background apps; add SmartMixin to your battery-optimization exceptions
The alert never fires
- Open the alert and double-check the threshold and operator (
>vs<) - If you used multiple conditions, remember all must be true at once
- Compare your threshold to the live readings on the dashboard — the condition might simply not have occurred yet
I see "Premium feature" when adding an alert
Alerts require an active Premium subscription. See Premium Features and Managing Your Subscription to upgrade.
